Turning a Sinking Sunroom and Worn-Out Deck into a Safe, Stylish Upgrade
Chong and Matthew’s home overlooks Lake Mendota, but their existing deck and 3-season room weren’t set up to fully enjoy the view. On top of outdated, failing materials, the sunroom was sinking and needed serious structural reinforcement.
We started by stabilizing and reinforcing the 3-season room to make sure it was safe, secure, and built to last. From there, we rebuilt the deck with TimberTech’s Prime+ line in Coconut Husk (a low-maintenance, durable choice that gave them the fresh look they wanted while staying mindful of budget). To make entertaining even easier, they upgraded to a drink rail, perfect for setting down a cocktail while taking in the lakeside view with friends.

From Occasional Grilling Spot to a Year-Round Deck and 3-Season Room
Before the remodel, Dan and his family had a small backyard deck big enough for a few chairs and plants, but not really functional for gatherings or year-round use. They wanted more space they’d actually use, but didn’t want the new addition to feel out of place.
We designed a 3-season room that naturally extended the existing gable roof, integrating seamlessly into the home’s original architecture. To give it that “up north” feel they desired, we installed unstained tongue and groove wood for their walls and ceiling. Finally, we used TimberTech Harvest flooring outside on the deck in a traditional decking size and inside the room in tongue-and-groove style, which created continuity in color and material, but provided unique vibes for the interior vs exterior.
The deck was built on the left side of the 3-season room (as you’re facing the back of the house) to follow the family’s most common path around the home, but we also added an access door / stairs on the other side to allow flexibility for future entertaining. While the deck wasn’t their original priority, our team helped Dan and his family envision how the space would function as a whole: the 3-season room and deck work together, providing year-round use, grilling space, and multiple ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Updating a Large Deck for Family-Friendly Function and Low Maintenance
The Ehmke family had a large deck that provided plenty of space but needed updates to make it more functional, safer, and easier to maintain for a young family. Some areas (shown below) were narrow and awkward to use, and the untreated wood required regular upkeep that didn’t fit their lifestyle.
We reimagined the layout, expanding narrow areas for better usability and swapping the traditional railing for white Keylink horizontal cable railing. The deck itself features a TimberTech Terrain+ Dark Oak surface with a Landmark American Walnut picture frame border, which adds a finished look while standing up to the wear and tear of family life. The cable railing also increases visibility across the yard, making it easier for parents to keep an eye on kids and pets, while a matching gate on the stairs adds another layer of safety.

Navigating Yard-Level Challenges with a Seamless, Low-Maintenance Deck
It seems like “Dan” is a popular name around here, and this Dan near Appleton, WI had a backyard challenge we were happy to solve. With a garage service door at yard level and limited space between the patio door and other access points, a standard deck layout wasn’t working. Rather than leaving an awkward gap or installing separate pavers (which Dan didn’t want), our team designed an integrated step within the deck, creating a continuous, accessible surface that flows seamlessly from the house to the yard.
The old deck was also aging, and Dan wanted low-maintenance, high-quality materials so he wouldn’t have to redo it again in a few years. Underneath, a concrete slab posed another challenge, but we were able to build over / through it safely and to code, without bringing in heavy equipment or disrupting the backyard.
The finished deck features TimberTech Prime+ Dark Cocoa picture frame and fascia with Sea Salt Gray inlay, providing a durable, stylish surface that complements the home and stands up to the demands of everyday use. The dual tone also helps visually denote changes in elevation.
